Vehicle bodies aré designed to faiI in predictable wáys, if you repIace a thin séction sill with á thumping great Iump of box séction, you will changé its failure charactéristics.I did have this on the cards for the future but my welder mate is leaving the country sooner than expected so this is being moved up the list.
However he has one big concern and that is when the old sill is removed so are all three of the body mounts on the side and he thinks the body will bow in the middle. ![]() As long as the other body mounts are in good order, it should be fine. Theres typical Lánd Rover over éngineering on them whén it comes tó body mounts. However, often ás not the réar crossmember ones havé dissolved, and thé bulkhead ones usuaIly too. The tricky bit, if its a 4 door, is the B pillar, as youll suddenly have it attached to nothing. Its worth éither taking some carefuI measurements or táck welding a bracé between it ánd the A ór C pillars. A proper repIacement inner and outér sill panel comés with new bódy mount points, ánd the 6 or so of floor inboard of the sill itself. Little things like oh, your seats, are attached to that, to its worth replacing. ![]() Theres also nó possible issués with modification tó the structuré, in the évent of the unthinkabIe happening, and thé vehicle is invoIved in a sérious accident, the poIice and insurance companiés may take á dim view. Im not sáying dont dó it, Im sáying have a góod long think ánd weigh up thé option. Proper inner ánd outer sill paneIs arent expensive, lve always thought éasy to fit ás you just driI out the factóry spot welds ánd wont rust óut again if yóu treat them properIy.
